De BerkelBike is het geesteskind van Rik Berkelmans (1970). Berkelmans is afgestudeerd als Toxicoloog in Nijmegen en als Inspanningsfysioloog in Amsterdam. Door zijn achtergrond is hij zich bewust van het belang van inspanning voor het functioneren van het lichaam. Hij begreep dan ook dat mensen met een dwarslaesie een groot gezondheidsprobleem hebben. Het weefsel dat niet of nauwelijks meer gebruikt wordt zal sterk in kwaliteit afnemen en kwetsbaar worden. Dit uit zich o.a. in decubitus, wonden aan het zitvlak en aan de voeten en enkels. Het tweede probleem is de algehele gezondheid. Berkelmans wist dat bewegen voor mensen die niet in staat zijn de grootste spieren van hun lichaam te gebruiken niet veel zin heeft. Bij intensief armgebruik gaan deze relatief kleine spieren verzuren nog voordat hun conditie opgebouwd wordt. Ze kunnen dus wel sterk, maar niet fit worden, terwijl juist als je niet kunt lopen een goede conditie erg belangrijk is.

Om dit probleem te overwinnen moesten de beenspieren weer actief meedoen, maar heel belangrijk was dat het ook aantrekkelijk was om het apparaat te gebruiken, zodat mensen gemotiveerd blijven om te fietsen. Op deze manier is de BerkelBike geboren. Aansturing van de benen door middel van Functionele Elektrische Stimulatie in combinatie met handbiken en dit allemaal te koppelen aan de rolstoel.

The inventor
The BerkelBike is the brainchild of Rik Berkelmans. Berkelmans graduated of Chemical Toxicology at the Catholic University Nijmegen and Exercise physiology at the Free University Amsterdam. Because of his background, he is very much conscious of the importance of exercise for the functioning of the body. Knowing this, he understood that people with a spinal cord injury have a big indirect health risk. The tissue, which it not or hardly used, will decline in quality and become vulnerable. This results among others in decubitus ulcers at seat, feet and ankles. The second risk is the general health. While the government proclaims from the housetops that we should move more, Berkelmans knows that this not very useful for people, who cannot use the biggest muscles of their body. By intensive use of the arms, these relatively small muscles go sour even before a good condition exercise takes place. The performance-determining factor is the muscles in the arms and not the general condition. Accordingly, it is not amazing that even wheelchair athletes, who do endurance sports, have upper-body of a bodybuilder.

The idea
To overcome this problem, the leg muscles should participate actively, but very important was that it also should be attractive to use the machine. This way the therapy-dedication stays high. In this way the BerkelBike was born. Control of the legs by Functional Electrical Stimulation in combination with hand-cycling and all of this able to connect and disconnect to wheelchair.
